We all have some sort of food storage containers in our home. These have all sorts of uses. They can be used to reheat food, they can be used to store food, or they can be used as mixing bowls. No matter what these food storage containers are used for, there are many benefits of quality plastic food storage containers.
A good quality container will cost a bit more initially, but they will be worth the money. They will last longer and they will have a better seal. With a better seal, any food that is stored in these containers will have less exposure to bacteria and air, that can make the food spoil in a faster amount of time.
Keeping yourself and your family safe from bacteria found in foods is an important concern. Here are some simple food storage safety tips for certain types of edibles. Dairy products, especially milk, will sour quickly. Refrigerate immediately. Always keep an eye on their expiration dates and follow them closely, perhaps more so than with any other food product. When the date has come, discard any used milk right away.
Eggs do not really need to be refrigerated, and can be kept in a bowl on the counter. Some people feel that they keep a favorable consistency and will crack open more easily when NOT kept in the fridge. However, if you do decide not to put them in your icebox, try to use them within a week.
Vegetables should be kept in the vegetable crisper. This does not apply to root vegetables, like potatoes and onions. Lettuce is best left in its plastic wrap until used. Once you have used some of the lettuce, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store in a plastic container.
As for frozen foods, try to pack them all together for their ride home from the grocery store. This helps them keep each other frozen longer. If you can, take a cooler with you and put them in there. As frozen goods thaw, water is released and when the items are refrozen, ice crystals are formed. This leads to that 'freezer burn' taste.
Also in the cooler you should put any meats. Beef, chicken, pork and fish all have natural bacteria on them. Cold temperatures will hinder its growth. Be sure to keep them away from all other foods to prevent cross-contamination. Store them at the bottom of the refrigerator to prevent any drippings from getting onto other food. Being careful with food storage can keep your family safe from illness and it will make your food last longer too.
The shelf life for good quality plastic food storage containers is much longer. Lower quality containers will deteriorate much faster during normal use. With better quality, they can be used in a microwave many more times and they can be put through the dishwasher more times. This adds up to getting many more uses from them.
Better quality containers are more versatile. In addition to just storing food, these containers can be used as mixing bowls. The structure is thicker and can withstand harsher treatment. These would be things such as mixers and scrapers. Mixers and scrapers would cause damage to a cheaper container but a better quality container can hold up against these items.
Good quality containers will usually have their own type of storage system. This could be something such as the containers fitting into each other, the tops all locking together, or a sturdy holding case that comes with the set. This will make the set easier to keep track of and no part will be lost. There are many different types of food storage containers. Spend the extra money to get a good quality set of plastic food storage containers and they will last a long time and be well worth the money.
